A group of men are believed to have targeted Sunil Gomes, 65, because of his religion.

Yet cops say the motive for the vicious murder still remains unclear.

The brutal stabbing took place in Bonpara, Bangladesh.

It is the latest in a spree of attacks on religious minorities by Islamic militants.

Deputy Police Chief of Natore district Shafiqul Islam said: “Sunil Gomes was hacked to death at his grocer store just near a church at Bonpara village.”

The brutal killing comes hours after an anti-terror cop’s wife was stabbed and shot dead in Chittagong, in the south east.

The gruesome attack bares chilling similarities to attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh.

Homegrown jihadists have slaughtered more than 40 people in the past three years.

But there has been a spike in sick attacks in recent weeks.

International terrorists, including ISIS and Al-Quaeda’s South Asia wing, have claimed responsibility for most of the murders.

Experts claim a government crackdown on the groups has provoked the spike in extremism.
