Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday alleged that opposition BNP has resorted to killings and kidnapping across the country to fulfil its political mission.
All the incidents of secret killings and disappearances will be probed to bring the culprits to book, she said.
The prime minister urged people to remain alert to “BNP’s plot” to foil war criminals’ trial. No force in the country would be able to halt the ongoing trial of war criminals, she insisted.
Addressing a public meeting at Sheikh Kamal Stadium in Gopalganj, Hasina said, “It’s Ziaur Rahman who is the pioneer of politics of killing in Bangladesh.
“Zia is the first man who betrayed with the freedom fighters and killed scores of freedom fighters in Bangladesh including Col Taher and Maj Haider,” she mentioned adding, “Zia, who freed around 11,000 razakars and Al-Badrs from the jail, is the first and prime patron of the anti-liberation forces, and his wife had rehabilitated the anti-liberation elements in politics.”
Referring to the success of the then Awami League government in 1996-2001, Hasina said AL always works for people and the country had achieved remarkable progress in different sectors at that time.
“We took a project for construction of 18,000 community clinics across the country to reach healthcare services to the doorsteps of people, but BNP after coming to power in 2001 stopped the project depriving people from the benefits,” she complained.
The AL has ensured food security of people and established their right to education and health, she pointed out. “We have also ensured the religious freedom of people while BNP had made the country a safe haven of militants, terrorists and corrupts.”
Regarding the dilapidated highways of the country, the prime minister said BNP and the previous caretaker government overlooked proper maintenance of the roads causing the situation. The present government has already undertaken a Tk 1,400 crore project for repairing the roads, she said.
The prime minister sought public support for her government saying, “I have nothing to seek from you but your cooperation to build a poverty and hunger-free Bangladesh.”
Earlier Hasina commissioned a 100MW furnace oil-run power plant in Gopalganj.
About the inauguration of the district’s first power plant, Hasina said her government has undertaken necessary measures for uninterrupted power supply across the country during the next irrigation season. She urged people to maintain austerity in using electricity.
The government has framed a power sector master plan under which target has been set to generate 13,300MW electricity by 2015, the prime minister added.
AL presidium members Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim MP and Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir MP, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Faruk Khan and PM’s adviser Dr Syed Modassir Ali addressed the meeting organised by Gopalganj district AL. Acting president of the unit Raja Mia Batu presided over the meeting.
The premier also laid the foundation stones of three projects — Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Eye Hospital, Gopalganj Vocational Training Centre and Sheikh Sayera Khatun Medical College Hospital.
