Disappearance Haunting Sylhet: The Case of Sundar Mia

It seems as if Sylhet is slowly earning the unwanted tag of being a “hotbed” for criminal activities such as murder, kidnappings, extortion etc. For since the 10th of December 2013.

Mr. Sundar Mia, son of former joint secretary of the BNP in the Osmani Nagar Thana, has been missing. It is worth mentioning that Mr Sundar Mia was one of the most recognizable faces in that area, and was quite vocal of these things especially after one of Sylhet’s most powerful political leaders Mr Iliyas Ali went missing.

He was always in the process of organizing humanitarian appeals and mass protests in and around the area, concerning Mr Iliyas Ali’s unfortunate kidnapping.

When asked about the incident of her son’s disappearance, Gedoni Bibi, mother to the missing Sundar Mia, collapsed in tears in front of this reporter.

In a trice the whole world seemed to shift, and the heart wrenching sight of Gedoni Bibi’s hovering in tears for her son, threatened to overwhelm anything and everything. But somehow after regaining her composure, Mrs Gedoni Bibi said this in cold fury, “The prime minister of Bangladesh lost her entire family along with her father in 1975. Now if her goons today go about snatching someone else’s child from her arms, does it not mean that she hasn’t learned a thing from the past? It was her hired goons and hoodlums who’ve abducted my son”. Meanwhile, the friends and relatives of Gedoni Bibi were seen consoled her gently throughout the whole ordeal.

Again it is important to mention that there are several areas in Sylhet where crimes like these have become common practice almost, inducing fear and apprehension into the air. There have been a staggering 48 missing person reports made during times, and not a single case has been resolved in fact, the police failed to provide any concrete reasons even as to why these individuals where abducted or went missing in the first place.

While we contacted and point out these shortcomings to the Operation in Charge (Also known as OC) of Osmani Nagar police station, the on duty constable there Mr Mokles Mia informed us that the OC was “busy” and is not available for comment. When asked specifically about Mr Sundar Mia, Constable Moles Mia stated that he knew nothing of the incident.

Sundar Mia’s disappearance has been met with intense fury and scrutiny by those who inhabit his area. They have expressed their deep disgust at the whole incident. We sat down to have a chat with the local chairman there and he had this to say, “I have heard of the news but as to who the perpetrators and instigators of this incident are, I have absolutely no clue.”
