It was an ongoing intense pre-election campaign session, organized by one of Awami League’s election hopefuls Mr. Shamsuddin Miaপ in the vibrant streets of Rajoir, Madaripur. However,r confusion ensued when a band of hooligans led by one Kali Khan began laying waste to the scene. The miscreants were sponsored by none other than M.r Shahjahan Khan, who is also (ironically) and election hopeful for the Awami League. Brandishing what was an assortment of wooden sticks, sickles, and machetes towards the by the then petrified crowd, they flung themselves at Advocate Shamsuddin Mia and other attending guests including Advocates Kader Ali, Hasan Firoj, along with South Rajoir Awami League leader Mobin Hossain. Alongside destroying anything within the range of their weapons including the dais, the group critically injured 4 people there which included M.r Shamsuddin Miah, Advocates Kader Ali and Hasan Firoj. There are also reports of cocktail bombs being used, and usage of petrol to set nearby houses ablaze.
Our Madaripur correspondent was at the scene of the crime and has informed us that M.r Shamsuddin Mia and Advocates Kader Ali and Hasan Firoj were swiftly enrolled at the local hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries are severe and they are currently still navigating treacherous waters.
Our correspondent also reports that the enmity between the two Awami groups has been long standing. According to a local source,s after Shamsuddin Mia publicly declared himself as the prime candidate for the upcoming general elections, it did not go down well with his rival M.r Shahjahan Khan. Largely because M.r Shahjahan Khan is currently a Member of Parliament, and harbours similar aspirations of retaining his position at the upcoming elections. However until today what it was just political tensions, and residents of Rajoir suffered more from that than anyone else. But today it has seemingly boiled over to something more serious, more sinister. The residents of Rajoir now wait with apprehension on what happens next.
Another startling rumour, circulated by the residents of Rajoir themselves was that the attending law enforcement members where instrumental in “allowing” for this tragedy to happen. Indeed some local residents report that Kali Khan’s group first approached the attending police force on site first and tried to incite Shamsuddin Miah’s group right in front of them.
Our correspondent later approached one M.r Mohammad Kamrul Hasan, the on-duty officer of the local police station nearby. Although M.r KarulHasann flatly refused to speak to us about what he states is an ‘individual case’, he admitted that the police force are aware of the incident and will investigate what actually happened down there. They also stated no one has officially lodged any complaints.
